What does Awalim mean?

Awalim is plural for Almeh. An Almeh was an educated entertainer that was very highly thought of in Egypt during the 1800's. She was educated in music, poetry, song, dance, history, religion and politics. All of these things were considered interconnected and important knowledge for any real artist. The Awalim were very well respected and left Cairo when Napoleon's invading army treated them as "common" entertainers.

We call ourselves Awalim because education is very important to us. We all study at least one musical instrument along with the finger cymbals (zils). I also stress the history and sociology of the wide spread area that is called the Middle East which brings us (and our audience) closer to an understanding of the culture we are emulating.

What is Tribal Style Bellydance?

Tribal Style Bellydance evokes the thousands of year's history of textiles, jewelry, dance and music of the Middle East. While the style is not an authentic way the dance form is normally presented, it is more of a teaching method of dance. Suzanna Del Vecchio

is an Oriental Dance Artist whose work is celebrated internationally. She is a true professional seriously dedicated to the art of the dance, in which she has been totally involved since 1975. She teaches and performs internationally as well as nation wide, and has five videos on the International market.

Amaya

An internationally acclaimed dance performer, Amaya has danced all her life and in many facets of show business. She even admits to "running away to join the circus" (Circus Conelli in Zurich, Switzerland). She was a featured performer in the German extravaganza, "Salome", and also in the theatrical production "Zorba". She was awarded First Prize in a dance competition in Cairo, Egypt.

Atéa
Dance Artist

As an instructor, Atéa has taught Hollywood celebrities, Middle Eastern royalty, and thousands of women from all walks of life. She is renowned for instruction that presents the ancient wisdom of the dance in a meaningful and accessible format for today’s woman.

As a dancer, Atéa’s performances range from art centers and universities to nightclubs and concert halls. She produced and hosted two cable television dance series in Los Angeles and has appeared on numerous television programs in America and abroad.

Now teaching in Los Angeles, Atéa is active with her video and television production company, Magical Motion™ Enterprises. She is continuing her work with health care professionals, dance experts, and artists to present and document the benefits and beauty of this classic feminine art form.

Zuhela Yamir

studied dance for 17 years with master teachers, Ibrahim Farrah and Elena Lentini. She took classes with Nadia Gamal of Egypt and Mahmoud Reda. During her years with Bobby Farrah she became one of his proteges. She continues taking classes with artist through out the country and abroad. She has artistic expression which brings an earthy style to her dance. In earlier years she performed in clubs, restaurants and theaters. She has been performing for 20 years. She always feels that continued education benefits your style and technique. She had three schools in New York and New Jersey. Her enthusiasm for technical instruction as well as her expertise in Oriental and Folkloric gives her students encouragement to express themselves artistically. Since moving to Ocala, Florida she teaches private to students at the studio; and group classes are taught at the Community Technical Adult Education School on State Road 200. The classes are taught in the Classical Oriental and Fokloric. Students learn unique choreographies, technique and zills. Zuhela and her sister Maia direct their troupe "The Benat Sharkien". They also have formed a company of talented dancers "The Zuhela and Maia Dance Company".
