The
Middle East is heir to the highly civilised pre-Islamic kingdoms of
Pharaonic Egypt, Assyria-Babylon, Byzantium, Achaemenid and Sassanid
Iran. Through diplo- macy, trade and, at times, warfare these kingdoms
exerted mutually stimulating economic, social and cultural influences on
each other, but from the seventh century AD onwards the rapid expansion
of Islam into these lands exercised a powerful unifying effect,
certainly in terms of spiritual and ethical values. Some regions of the
Middle East such as Turkey, the Levant and Egypt have long been
accessible to Europe through political and military intervention and
commerce. Recently the rapid development of tourism has opened Turkey,
Egypt and North Africa to a wide public, while the interior and coastal
territories of Arabia have become familiar to a significant European
expatriate community recruited for its technical skills. Both tourist
and professional public have encouraged a market for the portable
