Jewellery has survived in considerable quantities from the medieval Islamic period of the ninth to eleventh centuries up to modern times, enabling a progression of styles and techniques to be traced. As early as the ninth century gold- and silversmiths were skilled l fashioning light, graceful forms adorned with filigree and set with gemstones. Finds so demonstrate the long survival across a wide geographical span of certain types of personal ornament. Hoards of the eleventh century from as far apart as Tarabia in Tunisia and Chimkent in Central Asia include forms which may still be seen in village jewellery today, such as sheet-gold pendants, decorated with filigree, and massive silver bracelets, pendants and amulets.

The most obvious and conspicuous use was as personal adornment, worn by both men and women, areas of the body could be adorned: the head with ear- and nose-rings; the neck wit] manner of necklaces, chokers, pendants; arms, hands, ankles and feet with brace] anklets and rings. Closely associated is the use of jewellery as a dress accessory-head-dresses such as crowns, hats, diadems, ornaments intertwined in the hair, plu holders (aigrettes) placed in turbans, brooches, button fastenings, and gem-encrusted armbands, cuffs, collars and belts. Even weapons may have been regarded as d accessories, as can be seen by the gilded and jewelled daggers worn with Otto! Turkish court dress. Jewellery also has symbolic uses in both orthodox and popular  Islam; gem-studded cases at the Ottoman court, for example, were to contain relics of Prophet Muhammad, while at more modest levels are amulets, charms and talisman .
